Hi, I’m Ian.

I spend a lot of my time (and generally enjoy) working on machines; mainly electronic and software machines, but also mechanical ones. I also spend a bit of time (and generally enjoy) doing mammalian things like sleeping and eating.

Currently I live way down South in Dunedin, New Zealand, but I am originally from Northeast Georgia in the USA. I also lived for a while in Colorado, and have spent some time in Antarctica. This blog shares some of my own thoughts and experiences relating to tech work and personal projects; it is mainly intended for friends and family, and is in no way official nor related to my employer.

I’ve tinkered with electronics and programming since childhood and followed that track through university and most of my professional career. These days, I mostly work on embedded systems but I have held roles lower and higher in the stack; in electronics, desktop software, IT support, and systems administration. The tools we use in tech have evolved a lot over that time, lately most of my programming has been in Rust.

I’m a big fan of open source stuff; software, physical things, organisations, etc. And, I’m a fan of robust local communities. To that end, I spend some time volunteering with a couple local groups, and occasionally help out a bit with atsamd-rs.

This site is generated using Jekyll (for mostly historical reasons) and hosted at DigitalOcean. I’m a complete Ruby newbie and haven’t learned modern HTML worth a damn, so apologies for any difficulties you might encounter while reading this blog or as a result of reading this blog.

Photos are mine unless attributed otherwise or obviously not real. I do not recommend acting on anything you find here.
